US-Iraq Joint Op Targets Islamic State Leadership, Kills 15 ISIS “Operatives” In “Desert & Caves” A joint operation by US and Iraqi forces on August 29 targeted Islamic State leaders in western Iraq, resulting in the deaths of 15 ISIS operatives. The operation, carried out early in the morning, also led to the injury of seven US troops, with five wounded during the raid and two injured in falls. Despite no reported civilian casualties, the Islamic State members were heavily armed, with weapons, grenades, and explosive belts. CENTCOM reaffirmed the ongoing threat posed by ISIS, pledging continued aggressive action against the group alongside Iraqi and coalition partners. This raid occurred amid ongoing discussions between Baghdad and Washington regarding the future presence of coalition forces in Iraq, where the US currently maintains 2,500 troops. The operation followed a series of retaliatory strikes by US forces in Iraq and Syria, in response to over 175 drone and rocket attacks claimed by the Iran-backed Islamic Resistance of Iraq.
