Taiwan’s President Says Will ‘Resist Annexation, Encroachment’ Taking A Dig At China On National Day In his National Day address on 10 October 2024, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te asserted that China has no right to represent Taiwan, while also expressing willingness to work with Beijing to address global challenges. Striking a balance between firmness and diplomacy, Lai reiterated that Taiwan—formally known as the Republic of China—is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China. He emphasised Taiwan's determination to defend its sovereignty, maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait and seek equal and dignified talks with China.Lai, who assumed office in May 2024, is regarded as a "separatist" by Beijing, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory—a claim rejected by Lai's government. The National Day marks the anniversary of the 1911 revolution that led to the founding of the Republic of China, which retreated to Taiwan in 1949 after the communist victory in China’s civil war. Despite this history, no peace treaty or armistice has ever been signed between the two.
