South Africa Ruling ANC Party Loses Majority After 3 Decades, Needs Allies For Coalition Government South Africa ended three decades of dominance by the party that freed it from apartheid on June 1. South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) lost its absolute majority in the 2024 election for the first time since 1994. Voters angry at joblessness, inequality, and power shortages slashed the ANC’s share. This left the ANC with no other option but to share power with a rival in order to keep it.
