Putin Kneels Down To Pay Tribute To 2004 Russian School Siege Victims In Beslan Putin kneeled down at a memorial built for the victims of a 2004 school siege. Over 250 of more than 300 victims of the Russian school siege are buried at the memorial. Putin also visited the school in Russia’s Beslan where the tragedy took place. On Sept 1, 2004 militants took over 1,100 children, parents and teachers hostage. The militants wanted the withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya. They wired the school gymnasium with explosives and held people hostage for three days. On Sept 3, the siege ended with explosions and a bloody shootout after the Russian forces moved in.
