During the meeting with ambassadors from nations including Japan, Canada, Italy and Israel, Putin expressed opposition to "illegal" sanctions and restrictions imposed on Russia.Earlier that day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Russia would appoint a new ambassador to the United States in due course, provided Washington was willing to maintain contact. The previous ambassador, Anatoly Antonov, completed his assignment last month.
