The country's fire department reported that 540 people were evacuated from nearby tourist attractions as three water scooping airplanes and two helicopters worked to control the flames. Amidst global heatwaves and wildfires affecting the Mediterranean, Russia and Canada, the global average surface air temperature soared to 17.15 degrees Celsius (62.87 degrees Fahrenheit) on July 22. This temperature set a new record, surpassing the previous day's high by 0.06 C (0.11 F), according to the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service, which has been tracking such data since 1940.
