One Ships Sinks, Five Stranded Off Taiwan Amid Typhoon Gaemi Taiwan said five freight ships were stranded off the island and one sank due to Typhoon Gaemi on July 25.The affected ships included three Tanzania-flagged, one Indonesia-flagged, one Mongolia-flagged and one Toga-flagged. No oil leak has been detected, the island's Ocean Affairs Council said in a statement. One of the Tanzania-flagged freighters with nine Myanmar nationals on board had sunk off the coast of the southern port city of Kaohsiung and there had been no response from the crew. Search efforts were ongoing, it added.Typhoon Gaemi swept through northern Taiwan, killing three people and triggering flooding before barrelling west across the Taiwan Strait towards China where it is expected to dump more torrential rain.It would be the biggest typhoon to hit China's eastern seaboard this year, with its spiralling cloud bands spanning most of the Western Pacific Ocean and fuelling severe weather from the Philippines to Japan's Okinawa islands.
