New Zealand Navy Vessel Sinks Off Samoa But All 75 On Board Rescued A Royal New Zealand Navy vessel, the Manawanui, sank off Samoa on October 5 during a reef survey. All 75 crew and passengers were safely rescued, according to Defence Minister Judith Collins. Local media captured footage of the ship listing heavily and emitting thick smoke before it capsized by 9 a.m. the next day. The cause of the grounding remains unknown and will be investigated. The New Zealand Navy is currently operating at reduced capacity, with three of its nine ships idle.
