New US Arctic Strategy Flags China-Russia Cooperation, Resources To "Remake International Order" Russia and China are increasingly cooperating in the Arctic, which could impact regional stability, the US military has said. The remarks were made by Pentagon’s Kathleen Hicks as the US DoD* released its 2024 Arctic strategy on July 22.The Pentagon report said Russia and China’s closer collaboration and “growing alignment in the region” was of concern. Russia has in recent years beefed up its military presence in the Arctic by reopening bases and airfields abandoned since the end of the Soviet era.China, which describes itself as a "near-Arctic" state, has poured money into polar exploration and research. China has its eye on mineral resources and new shipping routes as ice packs recede with rising temperatures, analysts say.
