Japan, Philippines Hold First Joint Drill in South China Sea, Vietnam Sends Coast Guard To Training On August 2, the Philippines and Japan conducted their first joint military exercises in the South China Sea amid escalating tensions with China. The drills, involving the Japanese destroyer JS Sazanami and the Philippine frigate BRP Jose Rizal, included tactical maneuvers and communication exercises. This follows similar drills between the Philippines and the US on July 31. Additionally, a Vietnamese coast guard vessel is heading to the Philippines for its first joint training, focusing on search and rescue and maritime law enforcement. These actions reflect heightened regional cooperation and ongoing disputes over South China Sea claims.
