Hypersonic Missile Partnership With Australia Fortifies Indo-Pacific Region: US Lawmaker The joint production of hypersonic missiles by Australia and the United States will reduce strain on the U.S. defence industrial base and boost deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region, the Republican chair of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCaul, said in Sydney on August 16.In an interview, McCaul said a move to Australian manufacturing of cutting-edge hypersonic weapons was an example of how streamlined licensing of the most sensitive U.S. defence technology will help the U.S. compete with China in developing advanced weapons.A joint statement released by the two countries' defence and foreign ministers after talks last week said Australia is testing a Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile (HACM) with the United States, and will consider fielding it as its first hypersonic weapon for fighter jets.McCaul said he had met with hypersonic companies during his visit to Australia, which focussed on the AUKUS partnership with Australia, the U.S. and Britain.
