Holocaust Survivor Likens US Camp Protests To Anti-Vietnam Movement A survivor of the Holocaust, who was attending a ceasefire march in London on April 27, compared U.S. university protests against the war in Gaza to the demonstrations against the United States’ war in Vietnam during the 1960s.Speaking to Reuters during the demonstration, Stephen Kapos said his message to those involved in the Columbia University camp was a message of unity.“My message would be that they are not alone, that there is a worldwide movement which is ever-growing”, he said.Kapos added, “Eventually like during the demonstrations against the Vietnam War there is a chance of prevailing against the current repression by the authorities.”Student protesters set up an encampment at Columbia University at dawn on April 17 without required school permission, demanding Columbia divest from weapons manufacturers and other companies that support Israel's government and military.Protest encampments have also appeared at other colleges across the U.S. and abroad in solidarity with the Columbia students, drawing criticism from the White House, many Republican lawmakers and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who calls the protesters antisemitic and intimidating to Jewish students. In 1968, Columbia University was the site of a large student protest against the Vietnam War and the military draft and saw students take over campus buildings before being mass-arrested.
