“Grab Whatever You Need…” Tampa Residents Warned To Prepare For ‘Worst Hurricane In Their Lifetime’ Florida’s storm-battered Gulf Coast raced against a Category 5 hurricane on Oct. 7 as workers picked up debris left over from Helene. Hurricane Helene swamped the Florida coastline in the last week of Sept. causing widespread devastation.Florida is now bracing for Milton which has strengthened rapidly into a major hurricane. Milton could come ashore on Oct. 9 in the Tampa Bay area inhabited by 3.3 million people. The Tampa Bay region has not endured a direct hit by a major hurricane in more than a century. As evacuation orders were issued, forecasters warned of a possible 8- to 12-foot storm surge in Tampa Bay. That’s the highest ever predicted for the location and nearly double the levels reached during Helene.
