Germany's Far-Right Secures 1st Poll Win Since WWII, Scholz "Bitter" As Pro-Putin AfD Rises The Alternative for Germany (AfD) became the first far-right party to win a state legislature election in Germany since World War II. The anti-immigration party topped the polls for the first time ever in the former East German state of Thuringia with around 33% of the votes. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the results of two regional elections “bitter” as AfD’s win brought losses for his coalition. Meanwhile, experts say Russia stands to re-establish a strong foothold across East Germany regions it dominated for decades during the Cold War. Russia-friendly parties have surged to a stronger position across three eastern German states of Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia. Experts say the rise of the Russia-friendly far-right in Germany is likely to significantly impact Berlin’s support for Ukraine.
