Germany Waters Down Conscription Plans, Hungary's Orban Calls Mandatory Military Service "Crazy" Germany has reportedly abandoned plans for military conscription in favour of optional military service. In a meeting with leaders of the ruling SPD, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius unveiled a significantly watered-down version of the plan. The report also said the new model will be “largely voluntary” and look to lure in recruits with special perks.
