Gazans Mourn, Israelis Celebrate Killing Of Hamas Chief Ismail Hainyeh Israelis welcomed on July 31 the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the militant group Hamas.News bulletins on Israeli TV channels led with the news of the assassination of Haniyeh in the early hours of the morning in Iran. There was no immediate comment from Israel.Haniyeh, normally based in Qatar, has been the face of Hamas's international diplomacy as the war set off by the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7 has raged in Gaza.His assassination took place hours after Israel said it had killed a senior Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr, who Israel says was behind a deadly strike in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights that killed 12 children.Israelis in Tel Aviv, Israel's business hub, and in Sderot, a town a few kilometres away from Gaza, expressed positive reactions to the news of Haniyeh's killing.Haniyeh is the leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas which perpetrated the deadly October 7 attack on southern Israel, which sparked the war in Gaza, now in its 10th month.
