First Female To Lead Mexico Two Decades After President Called Women "Two-Legged Washing Machines" Claudia Sheinbaum secured a landslide victory to become Mexico's first female president on June 2. Sheinbaum made history in a country plagued by rampant criminal and gender-based violence. Sheinbaum, a scientist by training, won around 58-60% of votes, according to preliminary official results from the National Electoral Institute. This was more than 30% points ahead of her main opposition rival Xochitl Galvez. Sheinbaum won by some 50% points ahead of the only man running, centrist Jorge Alvarez Maynez. The 61-year-old former Mexico City mayor thanked her main opposition rival Xochitl Galvez, who conceded defeat. Watch the video to find out more.
