Violent protests have broken in the French-controlled South Pacific territory over plans to change voting rules. Nearly 300 Australians registered with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade want to leave the island. Albanese earlier told ABC radio that Australia had been seeking approval from French authorities for two days to send an evacuation flight to New Caledonia. Their request came after the French High Commission authorities closed the international airport and blockaded roads.
