Bangladesh Top Court Waters Down "Illegal" Job Quota, Protesters Demand Sheikh Hasina's Resignation Bangladesh’s top court on July 21 scaled back a controversial quota system for government job applicants in a historic move. The Bangladesh Supreme Court did not abolish but watered down most of the government job quotas that sparked nationwide violent protests. Attorney General AM Amin Uddin told the AFP news agency that “the Supreme Court has said the High Court verdict was illegal”. The SC ruling is being seen by many as a partial victory for student protesters after days of deadly clashes that claimed nearly 151 lives. However, a Bangladeshi student group which has been protesting against the quotas said it would not abandon protests despite the Supreme Court verdict.
