At Least One Killed, Thousands Evacuated As Heavy Rain Pounds Northern Japan On July 25, rivers in northern Japan’s Akita and Yamagata prefectures overflowed their banks following record-breaking rainfall in the region. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the highest level of alert in anticipation of the severe weather. Some areas in Yamagata received nearly 400 millimeters of rain within a 24-hour period, according to NHK. Although officials downgraded the alert on July 26, they continued to advise residents to remain vigilant about potential flooding and landslides. The extreme weather caused significant disruption and posed ongoing risks to the affected areas.
