Armenia Warns Not "Scared" To Leave Russian Bloc Amid US Outreach, Protests Over Azerbaijan Deal Armenia’s peace treaty with Azerbaijan has sparked fierce clashes between police and demonstrators. The demonstrations began in opposition to PM Nikol Pashinyan's plan to hand over four deserted villages to longtime rival Azerbaijan.Protesters calling for Pashinyan's resignation have been gathering weekly in the Armenian capital since April.Armenia returned four border villages that it had seized decades earlier to Azerbaijan in May. Pashinyan defended the move saying it is aimed to secure peace with Baku. The area Armenia has handed back is strategically important for the landlocked country because it controls sections of a vital highway to Georgia.Armenian residents of nearby settlements say the move cuts them off from the rest of the country.
